GAYNOR INTEGRATIVE ONCOLOGY (GIO)

Gaynor Integrative Oncology was founded by Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, a board certified medical oncologist, internist and hematologist. Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Weill-Medical College of Cornell University. He is the former medical director and director of medical oncology at the Weill-Cornell Center for Integrative Medicine.

Dr. Gaynor is a leading oncologist who has pioneered new strategies for both the treatment and prevention of cancer. He is the author of numerous scientific papers and three books: Healing Essence (Kensington Health 2000), Dr. Gaynor"s Cancer Prevention Program (Kensington Health 1999), and The Healing Power of Sound (Shambhala 2002). His work has been featured in Newsweek, USA Today, The New York Times, Healthy Living, Vegetarian Times, and many other publications. He has also been a featured guest on Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Edge with Paula Zahn, Discovery Health, CNN, and Fox News.

Gaynor Integrative Oncology has a practice located in Manhattan at 215 East 72nd Street, New York, NY 10021. The phone number is 212-410-3820. The practice coordinates care between Dr. Gaynor and nutritionists, physical therapists, and other health professionals to develop the best treatment plan for each patient and to help patients restore their physical, spiritual and emotional well-being. Gaynor Integrative Oncology is unique in that unlike many centers and practices, instead of simply offering a smorgasbord of integrative services to patients, Dr. Gaynor tailors the use of treatments to individual patient needs.

The practice also provides music-based meditation sessions and educational conferences for music therapy, yoga, chi-gong and other alternative therapy instruction. Patients may participate in both group classes as well as see individual practitioners. Patients can thus incorporate meditation, healing sounds, guided imagery and cognitive behavioral therapy, in concert with activities such as restorative physical therapy, aerobic exercise, chi-gong as well as botanical and nutritional counseling.

This type of practice meets individual patient needs which are unique to patients confronting cancer. No other disease, with the possible exception of AIDS, generates as much fear and apprehension as cancer. Gaynor Integrative Oncology has as its mission to treat the entire person by emphasizing healing in a way that acknowledges the complex nature of chronic illness. Thus Dr. Gaynor works with every level of the body"s healing processes (physiologic, genetic, psychosocial and spiritual) to create an optimal state of well-being. Gaynor Integrative Oncology is making available to patients the tools needed to enhance health through state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures and assessments, dietary and life-style changes, use of nutritional counseling, and mind-body health supporting techniques.

We all have inherent wellness-sustaining systems, which must function effectively to allow our natural state of health to flourish. Several of these systems follow the more traditional integration - organizing organs, tissues and cells into functional units such as the cardio-vascular system. In Dr. Gaynor"s practice where he has seen thousands of patients, he has learned that it is critical to look beyond just the individual components of these systems, and realize the more global impact a disruption in one system, such as the endocrine system, may have on the other systems of the body. By bringing together Dr. Gaynor"s extensive experience with academic medical treatments, nutritional research and practice as well as mind-body therapies, Gaynor Integrative Oncology has the potential to transform medicine in this country. It is the right institution for its time. THE TIME FOR PREVENTION IS NOW.

In 1996, the World Health Organization estimated that 10 million new cases of cancer occurred around the world in that year alone. Meanwhile, in the United States, the rate of cancer mortality was six percent higher in 1994 than in 1970. There has been some statistical improvement in the years since, but hardly enough to alter the general picture. If those ominous rates hold up, approximately every other man and every third woman will get cancer in their lifetime in the United States.

Apparently, then, if we"re waging a war against cancer, our strategies are sorely in need of improvement. This is not surprising, considering our inadequate responses to the threats that surround us. What we put in our bodies, the way we live our lives and ultimately, the way we treat our planet, plays a role in our risk for cancer. Because of the nature of cancer, the best cure by far, is never to get it.

Gaynor Integrative Oncology thus allows patients to integrate in state-of-the-art allopathic medicine with nutrition and mind-body techniques which Dr. Gaynor has pioneered. This integrative program is the foundation for creaqting a healing partnership between doctor and patient.
